How To Get Free Paint For DIY And Home Painting
If you ever wanted to know “Where can I get free paint near me?”, read.
1. Find sweepstakes, promotions and other offers.
Stores often have promotions that offer paint samples for free. Alternatively, we also offer a deal to get full size paint cans for free. Recently, I got a deal to buy 3 cans of paint for the price of 2 pieces. This became a big deal as I was painting a pretty large area of our house.
It’s a good idea to look for deals like the following in stores that sell paint:
It can also be identified by the paint brand itself.
If you have such a site, we not only take a look at the trading section, but we also recommend the following:
- Follow these stores and brands on social media. Many people post free paint giveaways on their social media accounts.
- Sign up for a loyalty program or a rewards program. This often gives you points for purchases that can be exchanged for free merchandise, or you can access exclusive deals like coupons.
- Sign up for our newsletter/email list. Most stores and brands have an email list you can sign up for. In general, information such as exclusive offers, details about upcoming sales and promotions, coupons and other cost saving deals are sent.
2. Browse Craigslist
Craigslist is a treasure trove for random freebies. You can get almost anything you can seriously think of for free. I’ve seen video games, furniture, clothing, and tons of other things that people offer for free.
If what you are looking for is free paint, it is worth a look there. Of course, there aren’t always people who offer paint there, but you might be lucky and you can find someone near you that offers free paint.
So, how do you find freebies on Craigslist?
Well, it’s really simple:
- Visit this page to find Craigslist for your city.
- Then look for the “Free” section that you can find in the “For Sale” section of Craigslist for that city.
- Clicking on this will take you to a page where you can find people who offer free stuff in your area.
- Now here you can find several categories of freebies. So, you have to filter the results to find what you want. You can do this using the search bar. Enter something more specific in the search bar, such as the term “paint” or “house paint” and hit enter. Then you can get results for free paint near you.
As said above, no one may be offering free paint locally, but it’s worth doing a quick search.
Now take safety precautions if you meet someone on Craigslist. So, meet up in a public place and if possible, take someone with you, where to go, and tell others who you are meeting with.
3. Look at the Facebook Marketplace
Sometimes you can even find people offering paint on the Facebook Marketplace. Now you probably know the Facebook Marketplace as a platform for buying and selling things.
However, there is also a section dedicated to free content. There you can find people who give all kinds of freebies!
This may include paint. Now, you can’t always find painters there, but it’s definitely worth a look.
Whether you’re painting accent walls, benching in your garden, or whatever project you have in mind, you can quickly check it out on our Facebook Marketplace.
You can empty the Free Items section linked below and then use the site’s search bar to find free paint.
- Search for free paint on Facebook Marketplace here.
4. Get free paint from Freecycle
In the following list is Freecycle. If you’ve never heard of Freecycle, it’s basically a website where people can give out stuff for free and get stuff for free locally. The website encourages recycling of items rather than throwing away what we don’t need.
So, those who want a bit of cleanup use Freecycle to throw things away instead of throwing them away.
As they say, one person’s trash is another’s treasure!
People hand out all kinds of things there. You can also request stuff for free from there. You can find someone near you that offers free paint.
- Get free plants from Freecycle here.
5. Contact your local recycling center.
Sometimes you can get free paint from your local recycling center, dump, or hazardous waste facility. These facilities collect unwanted pain from homeowners and business owners, then set aside so that people can come and take them for free.
Some centers offer this paint on a first-come, first-served basis, while others may offer free paint giveaways on certain days of the year. Call your local recycling center or hazardous waste center to see if they offer free paint.
6. Ask around
If you don’t have old paint cans around, ask around. Most people have paint left over from another project that they just didn’t use. In most cases, this paint dries out and is wasted. So how about asking your family and friends if they have old paint cans you don’t need?
In most cases they will-all you have to do is ask! They will be happy to give it to you. Of course, you can’t decide on the color or quantity, but it’s a really great idea for your DIY project!
7. Check around the house
I think you can find at least one can of paint in most homes across the country. I know we have at least two in our warehouse! The last time I painted the room in my house, I bought a cream paint for the ceiling, which was only available in huge bathtubs. Behold, we didn’t use all the paint on the ceiling.
So we put it in the warehouse and forgot it. After a while, we decided to decorate one of the closets built into the house. It wasn’t a huge space, but it looked tired and I thought I could do a new paint job.
When looking for something else in the warehouse, my husband found the leftover cream paint we had used on the ceiling. The paint was okay because the lid was tight, so I used it as a wardrobe.
This meant that we didn’t have to spend money on new paint and the leftover paint we already had wasn’t wasted.
Take a look at your garage, warehouse, or where you store your DIY supplies and make sure there aren’t any old paint cans you’ve forgotten about. You are likely to do it!
If you’re working on a project like sanding and repainting purchased used furniture, this is a great idea. I gave my mother-in-law the coffee table we had when we got out of the apartment. It was in good condition, but it didn’t fit the space we were moving around.
When we visited we saw her painted yellow using paint from another DIY project she was working on. Recycling paint is a good idea.
Here are some pro tips on when you can’t paint in the color you want for free.
The two biggest home improvement stores (Lowe’s and Home Depot) have something most people don’t know, but every professional painter knows. There is something called Oops Paint.
What is Oops Paint?
This is a custom mix paint color that the store misunderstood or was not picked up by the customer who ordered it. So instead of throwing them away, you get huge discounts and sometimes sell up to 90%!
You can usually pick up at half price or at least 20-30% off.
You can usually find Oops Paint behind the paint aisles in both stores. Now I can’t always find the color I need, but it takes a minute or so to check.
Also, if you do a lot of DIY work, it would be wise to pick a few and carry them with you, almost for free. You never know when you’ll need these colors!
Enjoy free paint!
