We all have a story (or two) to tell. Yours could earn you money.
Chicken Soup for the Soul is accepting stories and poems for inclusion in upcoming books. If you choose yours, you will receive a check for $ 200.
In the early 1990s, two popular motivational speakers put together a book full of inspiring stories.
“They called it Chicken Soup for the Soul because they wanted it to calm and comfort, just like their grandmothers’ cooking,” according to the company’s website.
The company eventually expanded its selection and has since published more than 250 titles within the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series that have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. The books focus on specific topics such as faith, raising children, and cats.

Guidelines for Chicken Soup Stories for the Soul
Your story should:
- Be written in the first person.
- Be it something that happened to you or someone you know. If you write a ghost story for someone else, that person’s name should appear as the author (they can appreciate their help in the bio section).
- Have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Create emotion in the reader.
- Come from the heart.
- Do not exceed 1200 words.
- Not be a biography, final work, thesis, letter or journal entry.
- It’s not about politics or anything controversial.
Submitted stories must be true. The publisher does not accept essays for creative writing or fictional material.
Chicken Soup Guidelines for Soul Poems
The guidelines for poetry presentations are a bit more relaxed. Your poem should:
- Tell a story that helps the reader learn about your experience, but in the form of poetry.
- Don’t focus on rhyming or sound like a greeting card
Chicken Soup for the Soul only accepts submissions of short stories and poetry that have not been previously published.
How to submit your entry
Submitting your entry is easy. Just fill out this online form, add your story or poem in the correct field, and hit “Submit.”
After submitting the form, you will see a confirmation message on your screen that the publisher received your entry. That’s all about it!
Well not exactly. There is one more thing to do, and it might be the most difficult.
Write your input into a computer application like Google Docs that automatically saves your work as you go, then paste it into the submission form to avoid losing your file if the browser unexpectedly closes.
It may take a while for the publisher to respond to you. The website explains: “We receive thousands of submissions for each book and we only have space for 101 pieces, so don’t take our silence personally!”
If your story or poem is selected, you will receive an email requesting your explicit consent to publish your work.
One month after publication, you will receive 10 copies of the book and a check for $ 200.
If you have an experience you want to share, turn on your computer or take out your laptop and get to work.
